Alright, with the EUROVISION 2018 Final happening next Satuday in Lisbon, I thought I'd offer my two cents about some of the "lead contenders"(?) that I've seen mentioned on a site... (Keep in mind this is my ~ mostly "uneducated" opinion, as someone who doesn't really follow the annual competition any more... I only listened to these listed here, and then only listened about twice or so... )

So, here in our new segment called:

My personal Top 7 of the songs I listened to:

1. Saara Aalto: Monsters (Finland)

I don't know what its chances actually are to win, but this is the one that stands out for me most, and I keep returning to it. Memorable and catchy chorus!

2. Netta: TOY (Israel)
Haha... This one has to be seen (and heard) to be believed.... It certainly STANDS OUT, and that might just be what actually helps it win? Personally I wouldn't mind... Kudos to her/them for "thinking outside the box"... It's weird, but imo it also works and is a great tune!

3. SuRie: Storm (UK)
I actually really like this year's UK entry... Quite catchy and memorable! I think it deserves to do well for them.

4. Charla K: Stop The Music (Swedish runner-up)
Ok, I'm cheating a bit with this one... If I understand correctly, this was the runner-up and lost to the winner for Sweden (see below), so sadly won't be competing this weekend... And I must say it didn't really impress me too much initially, but I finally got it! Written by the one-and-only PER GESSLE... One to remember!

5. Rasmussen: Higher Ground [Matt Pop Remix] (Denmark)
I thought this one was ok... It's not bad, but for me just wasn't really spectacular enough. That said, the mentioned "Matt Pop Remix" does make it much nicer imo.

6. Jessica Mauboy: We Got Love (Australia)
Quite beautiful and uplifting... Could easily be higher up on my list... Wouldn't mind if this one won.

7. Benjamin Ingrosso: Dance You Off (Sweden)
The actual Swedish winner. Got kind of a Bieber-thing going on, I think. Quite catchy with a nice beat, though for me personally maybe not catchy enough.

And then just some quick notes on two or three others I checked out, but didn't make my list:

- Alexander Rybak: That's How You Write A Song (Norway) ~ Yup, he's returning, and he CAN sing! Very cute and catchy actually, but ultimately the repeating lyrics were a bit too "meh" for me to make me want to listen again...

- Mikolas Josef: Lie To Me (Czech Republic) ~ Very handsome and cute guy (& outfits perhaps), and the song's a decent attempt at "cute", but just not memorable enough for me.

- AWS: Vislazt Nyar (Hungary) ~ I'm always quite curious to see what rock/metal songs come out of Eurovision, and I thought this song had some redeeming features: the voice, chorus and riff I thought were not bad. They lost me when the guy started screaming however... Sorry, but that's just a step too far for me.

And there you have it....

Ah, I forgot to mention I also listened to France's Eurovision entry ~ Madame Monsieur's 'Mercy'... and it's pretty... but not really more than that for me.

Correction: it's been brought to my attention that the Charla K song competed in Norway (not Sweden), and was the runner-up to the Rybak song.

Lovely review! We are in Eurovision week, and by God, the fan base is electrifying this year! With no obvious true winner yet and Cyprus hammering Israel with the bookmakers, we are in the true bubble of nationalism, politics, fury and humor this year.
I do agree with Finland being a personal favorite, but her chances to even qualify for the Grand Final has decreased since the rehearsals (bookies claim she has zero chance): it’s completely over-staged and over-performed. Thankfully that’s what validate the ‘pink’ vote 😀 – after Saara’s near X-Factor win she has undoubtedly established herself firmly as the new ‘queen’ of gay Europe – and getting married to her longtime girlfriend next month adds to the trend (and with the likes of James Blunt, Elton John and Nicole Scherzinger as guests of honour weigh in even more). Check out Saara’s debut album, it’s lovely and includes Thomas G:son’s gorgeous “Domino”.
My other favorites are: Cyprus (that’s how you perform an ordinary song and turn it into a monster-hit!), Israel (still firmly favored by the fans and bookies), Australia (great song, but a messy execution bordering the Brakpan Shuffle, which will cost her many votes) and Germany (Ed Sheeran meets James Blunt meets every other overly-nasal singer/songwriter).
Til Sunday, when we know the results – my money is on Bulgaria’s bland and overly-pretentious “arty” ballad (sadly the juries will lap it up! Euggh!)
