"SAVE THE LAST FOR WORST"... What we have come to call the phenomenon ~ where a good album has no filler ~ almost ~ till the last track... And one that I have now noticed a fourth time in particular (though there could certainly be countless other examples..)

Because if you HAVE to put it on the album, that s the best place to put it, isn t it? So you can enjoy the (almost) full album, and when you reach the last track you don t care for, you can just stop... so no major harm done.

- From 2009 s brilliant "Foot Of The Mountain" (a-ha): "Start the Simulator". (which, because it was last, didn t stop it from becoming Album of the Year.)
- From 2013 s masterpiece "Electric" (Pet Shop Boys): "Vocal". (same ~ because it was last, didn t stop it from becoming Album of the Year.)
- From the new best-in-decades-for-them album "The Neon" (Erasure): "Kid You re Not Alone".
- From the brand new up-to-quality-standard album "Point" (Yello): "Siren Singing".

It has been a while since there was reason to get excited about a new ERASURE release... Most of their latter-day albums have been more miss than hit imo... But I do think "The Neon" is an improvement.

It s a mostly up-tempo (and as such ~ fun) affair which shows Vince Clarke return to his more prominent synthy ways, and though Andy Bell s voice may seem a little aged at times, he s still in good form! The album loses perhaps a little bit of steam towards the end, but retains enough of its momentum to remain pleasurable.

And so as "The Neon" moves up to #1 this week, it becomes their first studio album-proper to reach the summit since "Chorus" in 1991! And on the Singles Chart "Nerves Of Steel" effectively becomes their first Top 10 hit since "Breathe" in 2005...

Well done, boys! You see? You deliver the goods and you get rewarded for it.

Man, I love this so much. And I realise most of my friends probably won t get this (and that s fine), so this post is mostly for myself to return to. Since I ve learned to accept these kinds of vocals, it s like a whole new world of sounds has opened up for me.
Swedish metal band TRIBULATION, with "The Lament". The only thing really "extreme" about it is the vocals... (and maybe the look...) But I enjoy so many elements of this... such a pleasant, atmospheric sound!
