Happy 50th everybody! Yes, today - 16 August - is the 50th birthday of MADONNA Queen Of Pop!
(And if you thought you were getting old but you're not 50 yet... you can really feel young in comparison... 'cause WOW - to be able to do what she does at 50....!)

And if you're not heading out for some kind of party/celebration in her honour today, you HAVE to listen to at least some of her music today... ok? Listen to at least one of her CD's... You HAVE TO!!!!
I myself am going to listen to an extended playlist I created going through her entire career of singles... whilst enjoying some beer with some friends. We'll also be watching some tidbits from her DVD's... and just talk about the "good old times" as well as the "good new times" with her ('cause really - it doesn't get much better than 'Confessions' and 'Hard Candy'!)

Happy birthday Madonna! May you carry the torch for many more years to come!

Some other famous names hitting 50 in 2008:

Michael Jackson and Prince are two of the most discussed. But there's also Ellen DeGeneres, Sharon Stone, Alec Baldwin, Viggo Mortensen. Andie MacDowell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michelle Pfeiffer, Annette Bening and Kevin Bacon.

OMG! I didn't think I would see the day! The #1 selling album in America this week is... Mamma Mia!

This report on billboard.com:

'Mamma Mia!' Leaps To No. 1 On The Billboard 200!
It took five weeks, but the ABBA-driven soundtrack to "Mamma Mia!" has ascended to the summit of The Billboard 200 for the first time. Moving 130,000 copies in the U.S. this week, the Decca effort climbs 3-1.

The film soundtrack to "Mamma Mia!," which features actors like Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried and Pierce Brosnan belting out ABBA favorites, also crowns Top Internet Albums and Top Soundtracks, while the original cast recording of the stage musical continues its reign on Top Cast Albums for a third week.

ABBA is also No. 1 on Top Pop Catalog albums with its greatest hits package "Gold," which jumps 37% to 33,000 copies.

It's a great thing to see ABBA outselling the likes of Miley Cyrus, Coldplay and Lil Wayne in the US... what a triumph for pop music!

OMG! I'm SO excited about the news that P!NK (the best rock star of the past 5+ years?) is coming out with a brand spanking new album soon!!!

Following up the recent SUPERB 'I'm Not Dead' comeback (possibly the album I've listened to most the last 2 years!) can't be easy, but if this first new single - 'So What' - is any indication, we're in for another GREAT ride! Oh, how I love her!

There's a reason why this song spends its 6th week at #1 this week.... it's FREAKIN' AWESOME!! And another reason (and reasons don't come much better than this): this song really DOES make you want to get up and just freakin' DANCE!

If you're one of those unfortunate souls who haven't discovered the wonderful talent of LADY GAGA yet... there's simply no time like the present! Check out one of the best pop tunes to come out this year, and treat yourself to this GREAT LIVE PERFORMANCE...!

This is no less than a historic occasion as far as I'm concerned... The 4 original members of ABBA made their first public appearance together - apparently since 1986 - recently at the world premiere of the new movie 'Mamma Mia', in Stockholm. So great to see them!

And great to see FRIDA and AGNETHA seemingly enjoying each other's company (I'm not saying they didn't before, but... I'm sure you've heard the rumours.)

They were asked again afterwards if ABBA would ever reform, and again they said they wouldn't. I think it's for the best - remember them as they were at their best.

Yeah, and the most jealous I've ever been in my life? When my good friend Christo phoned me from South Africa at the start of the Mamma Mia musical there, to tell me the two men from ABBA were appearing on stage... what I wouldn't give to see them live!

I'm SO happy about the success of the new 'Mamma Mia!' movie... and as a result the Movie Soundtrack and again ABBA's hits compilations!
Not only is it doing SURPRISINGLY well in so many markets around the world - with multiple ABBA collections making the charts, but also in the US - which has traditionally been a bit of a harder market for the quartet!
The 'Mamma Mia' Soundtrack is the 3rd bestselling album in the US... with 168,000 copies sold the past week alone!! The famous ABBA hits compilation - 'Gold-Greatest Hits' is #1 on Billboard's Top Pop Catalog Chart, with 2 more ABBA albums in the Top 10, and ANOTHER one in the Top 15...! (And on the "overall" Album Chart, 'Gold' is the 19th best-seller!)

It's SO GREAT to see the band that I've always believed to be the best band in history, to keep being appreciated and introduced to new generations; I don't think anyone deserves it more!

As for the UK, saw this article:

"Swedish pop sensation Abba made UK chart history with the return of their greatest hits album to the number one spot.

First released 16 years ago, Gold - Greatest Hits is the oldest album ever to reach number one, The Official Charts Company revealed.

It is the fourth biggest-selling album of all time in the UK and one of the top 40 worldwide, with sales topping 26 million, the company said.

It is the fifth time that Gold - Greatest Hits has topped the UK chart, and the second time that the band has achieved a number one selling album in the last few weeks.

The soundtrack to the hit Abba-inspired film Mamma Mia! took the top spot in July.

The album's success saw Coldplay's Viva la Vida pushed down one place to number two."
