This report just in from www.billboard.com:

'FAILS' SUCCEEDS: Madonna collects her seventh consecutive No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Dance Singles Sales chart as "Nothing Fails" (Maverick/Warner Bros.) claims the top spot. That means every Madonna single released in this millennium has achieved pole position, starting with "Music" in September 2000 and continuing with "Don't Tell Me," "What It Feels Like for a Girl," "Die Another Day," "American Life" and "Hollywood."

That may make it sound like it's always been easy for Madonna to dominate the dance singles sales chart, but that's not true. Prior to "Music," she only had a solitary No. 1 hit out of eight releases.

Madonna is also No. 2 on the dance singles sales chart with "Me Against the Music," in which she plays a supporting role to Britney Spears. It's the first time one artist has occupied the top two slots on this chart since 1997, when Puff Daddy was No. 1, 2 and 3.

On Hot 100 Singles Sales, "Nothing Fails" debuts at No. 1, but in a depressed singles market sold too few singles to earn a place on the Hot 100 yet.

QUOTE: "Nothing Fails" debuts at No. 1, but in a depressed singles market sold too few singles to earn a place on the Hot 100 yet."

How could this EVER make any sense? It's the #1 selling single in the USA, but "failed" to make the Hot 100, because "urban" radio stations aren't playing it enough!

In my books a chart is, and should always be, based on sales (like the Billboard Hot 100 was until 2000) - to call the Billboard Hot 100 "official" when airplay contributes 85% thereof, just doesn't go down!

BTW, what exactly is a "depressed singles market"?

I see it this way. The US is experiencing a "depressed singles market" and a "depressing airplay chart"!

Yeah - you're right McMarvyn, it makes NO SENSE! The Billboard singles charts at the moment is quite a "mad world"... (any ideas for a title song for this situation?)

BTW - thanx for the lyrics to "Mad World", Popmaster, and the UK release schedule... quite a few interesting listings...
(Why was Pet Shop Boys' "Flamboyant" moved up from January to March - when there'll be more competition?)

And finally - the UK's 2003 Xmas midweeks (Tuesday) - it's such a close race between No's 1 to 4 that anything can still happen by Sunday!

Bookies, however, are now backing the Gary Jules version of "Mad World" to be No. 1, as it gained 170% in airplay since Monday! The Idols song also features on their Xmas compilation, which sold a whopping 350 000 last week, and clocked more than 110 000 by Tuesday closing-time this week.

SINGLES:

01 NEW THE DARKNESS – Christmas Time
02 NEW MICHAEL ANDREWS & GARY JULES – Mad World
03 NEW THE IDOLS – Happy Xmas
04 NEW BO SELECTA – Proper Crimbo
05 (01) KELLY OSBOURNE & OSSY – Changes
06 (02) WILL YOUNG – Leave Right Now
07 (04) SHANE RICHIE – I’m Your Man
08 NEW BLUE ft. S. WONDER & A. STONE – Signed, Sealed, Delivered
09 NEW SUGABABES – Too Lost In You
10 NEW ATOMIC KITTEN – Ladies Night

ALBUMS:

01 WILL YOUNG
02 DIDO
03 MICHAEL JACKSON
04 REM
05 SUGABABES

Thanks for the info McMarvyn!
The "Mad World" song is actually quite good - it'll make a good #1!
It'll just be SUCH AN INJUSTICE if the Sugababes song make only #9...! It's possibly the BEST song they've ever done! It deserves to be No. 1!
(The Blue single also unexpectedly low, isn't it??)

I think The Idols are using the good album sales as an excuse for the single's poor performance (incidentally down to #5 on the midweeks). Gary Jules is outselling them 2:1 at the moment, despite the fact that "Mad World" also appears on Now 56 (released in November - and, let's not forget that the Now-series always reach sales figures of over a million during the festive season).
The gap between The Darkness and Gary Jules is narrowing every day, and it would be great to see "Mad World" at 1! Even 2 weeks, maybe - but that's a little far-fetched as we can prepare for the Beckham-Spice onslaught (40 000 + in pre-orders for "Let Your Head Go").
The week after that (Jan. 5) should be interesting since Victoria can expect fierce competition from tomorrow's Pop Idol winner and Kelis (also astronomical pre-orders).

"Let Your Head Go" is going to be huge (right 'image', right song and the right time) - prepare yourselves for another CGYOOMH! Didn't like it much at first, but right now I'm hooked. And, let's face it - she is enormously popular (and gorgeous and famous!). Did I mention the video?
As for the Pop Idol winner, neither Michelle or Marc come even close to Will Young (or Darius, for that matter). Who was the runner-up again, last year?
Finally, here's to Will Young's first hit on Blue-Box this week. May there be many more hits to come for the "President of Pop"!

Actually I think the song isn't all that bad... but I agree - she can't sing! (NONE of the Spice Girls ever could!) Anyway, I predict it WON'T reach #1... IF it IS as popular as they say, I predict the highest it'll get is #2...

I find the lyrics for "Mad World" quite haunting & depressing. But, it's such a good version!

"Mad World"

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, Going nowhere

And their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, No expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tommorow, No tomorrow

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
'Cos I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad World…
Mad World

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, Sit and listen

Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, No one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me…
Look right through me

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
'Cos I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad World…
Mad World

Here are the Number 1 US singles (sales based) for 2003. Amazing that some of these songs reached only the Top 60 on Billboard (which is now solely airplay based), while the singles sold in droves! No sign of Beyonce here:

Madonna – Die Another Day (2 weeks)
Mariah Carey - Through The Rain (2 weeks)
Kid Rock feat. Alison Moorer – Picture (11 weeks)
American Idols – God Bless The USA (8 weeks)
Clay Aiken – This Is The Night (12 weeks)
Hilary Duff – So Yesterday (2 weeks)
Rolling Stones – Sympathy For The Devil (1 week)
Elvis Presley – Rubberneckin’ (1 week)
Mercy Me – I Can Only Imagine (10 weeks)
Madonna – Nothing Fails (1 week) This week.

(Source: BCR Chart Watch)

And congratulations to Madonna, for having yet another Number 1 selling single in the States.

I forgot to add - also good to see a gospel band (Mercy Me) selling so well! According to BCR the first gospel song to reach No. 1 since Kris Kristofferson's "Why Me?".

This is SO INTERESTING!!
Quite a few of these singles didn't even reach the Top 100!
Madonna would have had two more following "Music" a few years ago, and even Mariah would have had one again this year!

This clearly shows there is something VERY WRONG with the current way the Billboard charts are compiled!
