I've been wondering how to describe best what I felt about the new BRITNEY album... then I thought this recent review in 'The Associated Press' described it best:

Surprise! Britney's New CD a Triumph
By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY

Britney Spears, "Blackout" (Jive Records): Just when it seemed safe to write off Britney Spears as a punch line only capable of entertaining people through tabloid escapades, she goes and gets all musically relevant on us.

"Blackout," her first studio album in four years, is not only a very good album, it's her best work ever - a triumph, with not a bad song to be found on the 12 tracks.

Granted, a Spears rave should be put in its proper context - it's not like we're talking Bob Dylan here. Spears is a lightweight singer who only flourishes when she has great songs and great producers to supplement her minimal vocal talent.

But when she has that help, she's fierce. And she gets that boost on every single track on "Blackout," a sizzling, well-crafted, electro-pop dancefest that should return her to pop's elite.

This is a shocker, given all the lowlights Spears has given us this year. From her embarrassing MTV Video Music Awards performance to her bizarre public antics to allegations that she's an irresponsible parent, Spears has been a walking disaster. It seems amazing that she even found her way to a recording studio, let alone did anything of value while in it.

But Spears emerges on "Blackout" as the antithesis of her tabloid persona - confident, sensual, and in control.

"I got my eye on you," she coos on one of the album's best tracks, "Radar," a sexy techno groove that you can't help but bounce to - a feeling that permeates all of "Blackout's" tracks. You won't find any saccharine ballads or fluffy pop on this disc - it's all about generating heat on the dance floor (and if Spears has shown us anything in the last year, it's that she knows how to party).

On the aptly titled "Freakshow," produced by Danja (who worked on Justin Timberlake's "FutureSex/LoveSounds"), Spears gets voyeuristic with a tantalizing promise to get wild in the club. The hypnotic "Get Naked (I Got A Plan)," also produced by Danja, features Spears breathlessly asking, "What I gotta do to make you move my body" before demanding, "take it off, take it off, take it off."

It's not all about grinding to the music, though. On rock-tinged "Piece of Me," produced by Bloodshy, she defiantly address her critics: "I'm Mrs. Bad Media Karma, another day another drama ... I'm Mrs. Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, I'm Mrs. 'Oh My God That Britney's Shameless.'" And on the slow-burn, Neptunes-produced "Why Should I Be Sad," the album's last track, she cops to heartbreak but refuses to let it get her down, a rare vulnerable moment.

Listening to "Blackout" is not only an energetic release, it's also a relief: No, Spears hasn't completely lost it, and yes, her career has a flicker of fire left - actually much, much more. But with all the damage Spears has done and continues to do to her public image, will anyone outside her core fan base (and who knows what that consists of these days) care anymore?

This album is the first, great step in making that happen."

And there you go. I'll even go as far as to say: I'll be surprised if March 2008's new Madonna album will be as good a pop album as this...!

Well, I had to smile when I saw the review was written by Nekesa Mumbi Moody. Bless her for using the word 'triumph' in a HEADLINE (aren't only homosexualists like myself allowed to use that word) , and bless Nekesa Mumbi's mom for exalting her with THAT name!

Personally, I think her (his?) review of 'Blackout' is a way bit OTT, but nevertheless well-written.

Admittedly it is NOT a bad album, as all the tracks are good; BUT that said, I'm still searching for that standout track to make me sit up and listen (*)... that alone for me, makes 'Blackout' average, if anything.

But, (and now I'm using that age-old cliché which I SO hate to read on the web) one or two tracks might "grow on me" (eugh, is that THE worst expresion EVER, or what?).

(*) Unlike 'X', which has its REALLY GOOD standout future Kylie-classics, and also ones you choose to forget after one listen.

This week sees the UK gearing up for THE most exciting chart action of the year!

Chances are really 0% for Sugababes' "About You Now" to be at the top again come Sunday.
But who will?

Here are the possibles:

Britney's "Gimme More" sees a physical CD release this week, AND she's currently at No. 3 on downloads only. Her chances ARE good, but...

Already 3 weeks at No. 1 on the airplay chart is Leona Lewis, 2006 X-Factor winner, with possibly THE best song of 2007! "Bleeding Love" is released this week on downloads and physical CD simultaneously, and it is the bookies' favorite (literally by the proverbial MILE) to be at the top on Sunday... and the next couple of weeks to come.

McFly's "The Heart Never Lies" is another song that stands a chance to be at No. 1. It's a great song, and they DO have the biggest fan-base in the UK (ALL McFly's previous No.1-hits are proof). The AWESOME video is currently at No. 1 on The Box AND on Viva.

"Rule The World" by Take That is the other favorite with the bookies to do it. Both their singles earlier this year went straight to No. 1, and this has a very good chance to do the same.

Comeback single of the year "Inconsolable" by Backstreet Boys also sees a physical release, and might just cause the great upset. Question is, do they still have enough hardcore fans to make it to No. 1?

Here's MY guess at Sunday's Top 5:
1. Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love
2. Take That - Rule The World
3. Britney Spears - Gimme More
4. McFly - The Heart Never Lies
5. Sugababes - About You Now

Other Top 10-entries can be expected from: Freemasons with 'Uninvited' (it's MASSIVE on airplay), former-Sugababe Mutya Buena's "Just A Little Bit" and the wonderful PSB/Gary Newman-inspired "Discotheque Français" by Matinée Club.

Should be quite interesting...
Although I would have liked to see Britney make #1, the Leona and Take That songs definitely deserve it more, so I hope either of them make it. My prediction for the Top 5 is exactly like yours!
(Btw - the Discotheque Francais song is very nice! )

An exciting chart week indeed in the UK... any one of the Top 5 singles would easily have made #1 in a quieter week, and this week you know even the #5 entry will be a big seller...!

The same on the Blue-Box chart this week... especially numbers 1 - 6 show impressive numbers this week, and ANY ONE of them could have been a #1 in a quieter week... such is the competition this time of year!

HOORAY! South Africa are the Rugby World Cup champions for 2007! I am ECSTATIC! They played so well (as did England, but SA was the better team). I'm really so proud of them!

Also think this comes at a very good time for South Africa (with all the negativity and crime in recent times), this can do their morale only good!
