X Factor title for sensation Leona Saturday December 16, 11:03 PM

Singing sensation Leona Lewis was crowned the winner of the X Factor talent show.

The former waitress' dream of stardom is a step nearer after she beat rival Ray Quinn in the final of the ITV1 reality show.

Thousands of hopefuls entered the competition but their numbers were whittled down to just two by judges Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne, Louis Walsh and the voting public.

A million pound record deal and possible fame awaits Leona, 21, from London, who has dreamed of singing professionally since she was a little girl.

Leona, who was the favourite to win the talent contest from the beginning, gave four impressive performances on the live programme to win the public's backing.

The receptionist, whose voice has been likened to Whitney Houston, sang the American diva's chart-topping hit I Will Always Love You as well as Celine Dion's All By Myself. She also gave a rendition of A Million Love Songs alongside Take That.

The judges predicted her voice would propel her to international stardom and that she would represent Britain on the worldwide stage.

Simon Cowell made no secret of the fact that he favoured Leona and Sharon Osbourne said, after her final performance, that it would be a travesty if she did not win.

She is not only the first woman to win the X Factor, she is the first female to reach the final.

"I am speechless," she said after the result was announced. "Thank you for voting for me. Thank you so much, this is a dream come true. You have all made my dream come true."

Once again the X FACTOR delivers. Following in the footsteps of international stars such as Will Young and Shayne Ward , previous winners of the x factor - Leona Lewis are compared to stars such as Whitney Houston , Mariah Carey and Celine Dion. And once again I have to agree - she truly has got a magnificent voice! On her way to the final of the x factor , she sang songs of above mentioned Divas, and everytime I got goose bumps all over. I just hope that she won't fall into the "hip hop trap" , but rather stick to pure pop music which made her and stars like Whitney and Mariah famous. "A MOMENT LIKE THIS " has already pre-sold 1 Million Copies, and I will collect mine on wednesday when it arrives in the shops.
Leona is an overnight pop sensation , with a very promising future!

I think Will Young was a Pop Idol, not on X Factor... (not that there's much difference, I suppose)

I guess Not . As long as the shows produce world class stars - of which Will, Shayne, and now also Leona have become part of.....

Here's my 10c worth:

Last year, when Shayne Ward won X-Faxtor, "That's My Goal" was released Xmas-week (the last week of the year) and it still managed to become the best selling single of the year by December 31 (total sales that week amounted to almost 900-thousand). Impressive!
Unfortunately, in my eyes "That's My Goal" was totally forgettable; and the song that lost out at 2nd place (chart sales, not X-Factor) will never be honored as "Song Of The Year 2005". Thankfully "You're Beautiful" will be remembered by many (and future generations) as an "all-time" classic, and the true Song Of The Year.
Now, the same is happening! Leona releases a Kelly Clarkson cover-version as her first single, and it about to become "Song Of The Year 2006" with less that 1% more sales than Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" who'll have to setlle as the runner-up!
Where is the justice! Oh, and yes I do agree that Leona CAN sing - but please let her enjoy massive sales with something at least more 'meaty' than "A Moment Like This"!

I must agree - she has talent and can sing, but this state of affairs is really SAD...! Can somebody tell me - WHY NOT get a 'proper new' song and release that as her first single?! A cover version of possibly Kelly Clarkson's weakest song as 'song of the year'? PLEASE!!

So the big evening has come and gone... And as usual the BLUE GLOVE AWARDS had its share of "predictable winners" as well as its surprises!

Summarising, the "stats" were as follows: Iron Maiden and Pet Shop Boys were the big winners - each walking away with 3 awards (one of the surprises being the former snatching away the 'Album Of The Year' from the latter), then 2 awards each were awarded to Will Young, Madonna, a-ha, Freshlyground, Europe and Kim Wilde. One award each went to: Scissor Sisters, Gnarls Barkley, Prince, Goldfrapp, Justin Timberlake feat. T.I., Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean, Gloria Estefan and George Michael.

An award introduced for the first time, and that I think very well-deservingly went to Europe - for 'Album Cover Of The Year' for their 'Secret Society' album... really great, isn't it?

Something related - as we're at the end of 2006, and gearing up for the New Year... is of course the YEAR-END CHARTS...

Congrats of course first of all to a-ha - for having the #1 single of the year for a second year in a row! (Last year was with 'Celice' - which coincidently still makes the Top 10 this year!)
Two other artists have two Top 10's... Freshlyground very impressingly with two in the Top 5, and Madonna ('Hung Up' - like 'Celice' - still hanging on in the Top 10!)

On the Album Chart, Pet Shop Boys have the #1 Album for the first time in their careers... (closely followed by metal masters Iron Maiden with the biggest album of their career).
The rest of the charts speak for themselves... all in all not a bad year for pop!

Well done to ALL the winners! And especially to Pet Shop Boys! Who would have thought that to old "poppers" like them could leave the islands shaken , not stirred, 20 years after their first single West end Girls ?

Yes, "Holly Dolly-fever" is sweeping over Waldia as well - the song is currently at No. 3 on the Ultra-Pop Top 30!

By the way, DO check out the No. 1 this week by Kenan Dogulu (Arab-Pop at its very best).

Kenan also walked away with the Ultra-Pop "Video of the Year" awards during Friday night's ceremony.

Incidentally, Mattafix's "Big City Life" took the award for "Song of the Year", followed by Mihai Traistariu's "Tornero", 6T2's marvelous cover of "Zabadak", Texas' "Sleep" & Chingy's fabulous "Dem Jeans".
